The St. Joseph’s College Rangers Team of St. Joseph’s College for Women (A), Gnanapuram, Visakhapatnam, organized a Beach Cleanup Activity at YMCA Beach on 2 October 2026, commemorating Gandhi Jayanthi. The programme was conducted from 7:00 AM to 8:30 AM under the leadership of Dr. P. Mary Anupama, Ranger Leader, with the active participation of 21 Rangers.

The activity was organized with the objective of creating awareness about environmental cleanliness, responsible citizenship, waste management and the importance of protecting marine and coastal ecosystems. The Rangers enthusiastically participated in cleaning the beach surroundings and collecting waste from the shoreline. Through their collective effort, the students demonstrated that environmental protection is not merely a responsibility of authorities but a shared responsibility of every citizen.

The programme was particularly meaningful as it was held on 2nd October, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, whose principles of cleanliness, simplicity, service and community participation continue to inspire generations. The activity reflected the spirit of Gandhi’s message that meaningful social change begins with individual responsibility and collective action.

The day also marks the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, who was also born on 2nd October 1904. His famous call, “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan,” highlighted the importance of both national service and the contribution of farmers to the country. His emphasis on collective effort and service provides an additional inspiration for activities undertaken for the welfare of society.

“The future depends on what you do today.”
— Mahatma Gandhi

The programme concluded with the Rangers reaffirming their commitment to clean surroundings, environmental responsibility and community service. The Beach Cleanup Activity was therefore not only a cleanliness drive but also an opportunity for young students to translate the values of service, discipline, responsibility and civic consciousness into action.
