Students reported at 7.00 AM. Camp involved in flag raising, prayer, pravesh testing. Knot testing of skill and theory was also done. Camp closed at 6PM.

 Topic- The Growing Concern- Understanding Obesity in Youth

 

Sir discussed about BMI ( body mass index) , bmi  more than 30 is considered as obese, 67% of Americans are obese

He narrated that Obesity causes depression .  Liquid fasting and fruit fasting helps in decreasing weight ( forced fasting). Even tho its temporary .  Youth these days are coming for surgery as obesity is increasing due to sedentary lifestyle and stress

Doctor says  Stress increases hunger hormones ie gherelin.

Obesity can be prevented by educating children .  Our body craves to increase our weight because our body has a fat set point.

Obesity affects women a lot in the case of period and infertility problems and Solutions - take less stress.

Some important points-

-  Don’t use mobiles after 9pm

- Disciplined and motivated towards weight loss

Never do  Forced fasting

Day 5 report Date 06-09-2024

Ms. Ramya Kosuri Pastry chef, Freelance expert chef Trained At Sunrice college, Singapore CAI- Hyderabad

She spoke about what is balanced diet and how it helps to avoid chronic illness, The major macronutrients and micronutrients. Macronutrients like carbohydrates, Proteins and fats while  Micronutrients like vitamins(vit a,b,c,d,k etc), minerals ( calcium, iron) fibre . Important notes- portion control and moderation, meal timings and frequency are very importnact.  Special considerations like cultural and dietary preferences ( vegetarian, non vegetarian and vegan )

Mam says We should avoid processed food , trans fat , unhealthy fast food. She told How to maintain a balanced diet? Whole grains, vegetables and fruits , lean meat, eggs, dairy products, olive oil, nuts,seeds, 8 glasses of water.

Her recommendations:

 - breakfast should be heavy fibre rich, carbohydrate and healthy fats, Lunch -more  protein and vegetables

Meal plan ---Breakfast - overnight soaked oats with milk and mixed berries, chia seeds and nuts ( complex carbohydrates , fibre rich , healthy fats )

Lunch - quinoa salad, salad with brown rice

. Dinner - stir fried tofu with brown rice and toasted nuts/ in indian cuisine vegetable khichdi, roasted eggplant

 Snack- greek yoghurt with  honey and nuts, salad

 Unhealthy lifestyle mainly causes PCOS, diabetes, thyroid and Myths about thyroid - lifelong medicine consumption, weight loss is not easy.

Symptoms of thyroid that people avoid- fatigue, hair fall, constipation, depression etc

What is thyroid? About the gland and T3 T4 hormones

 He spoke about hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Different functions of thyroid gland

Disadvantages of taking thyroid medication for a long time ( t3 t4 is normal but tsh level is still high or low ) . Tips for thyroid management - Eat selenium rich foods , Avoid cruciferous vegetables,yoga , having fibre rich foods like beans,priotizing  sleep , taking less stress

 Topic: Nutrition in bone health

Bone forming cells are more at young age and bone repairing cells are more at older age. To improve our bone health we can workout, take supplements if needed, no alcohol or smoking. Warning signs of low bone mineral density - back pain , frequent fractures. Loosing teeth, posture change.

How to maintain BMD is by - Healthy weight, calcium rich diet , physical activity, proper sleep and supplements if needed . Calcium rich diet for which  curry leaves, drumstick leaves, ragi, agathi leaves  etc can be consumed.

She gave nutritional and workout tips

"Regardless of who the father of the disease is surely it's mother is improper diet"

She also spoke about low and high impact exercises , Nutritionally she asked us to  eat more green leafy vegetables and said to cook it properly and in a closed way.  Good water intake , regular excercise or yoga , having millets is important.

 Topic: Diabetes- Induced Hearing Impairment :  Understanding the link and overview

 Diabetes induced hearing loss mainly cause by diabetes mellitus . 30 percent of diabetes mellitus patients experience hearing loss . Diabetes patients are 2x more likely to develop hearing loss. High blood sugar level causes damage to delicate cells . Oxidative stress and inflammation contribute to hearing loss . Diabetes affect the nerve signals from inner ear to brain causing hearing loss, Diabetes causes thickening of blood vessels in inner ear .

 Hearing problems caused by diabetes - Presbycusis hearing loss, sensorineural hearing loss , tinnitus, auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder

Symptoms of hearing loss - not able to detect speech , increased volumes etc. hence protecting our ears is importnat

People with diabetes can do ? Preventive measures - hearing aids, aural rehabilitation, diabetes management

Role of nutrition to prevent hearing loss : Magnesium, zinc , omega 3 fatty acids , vitamin D , vitamin A C E, vitamin b 9 ( folate) intake,

Audio meter can be carried if required.  Temporary hearing loss can be treated but permanent hearing loss is irreversible

High levels of glycaemia causes hearing loss.  When have high or low blood glucose levels both leads to hearing loss. Diabetes patients have widened blood capillary, the blood supply to cochlea is reduced causing hearing impairment. Even Chemotherapy leads to oto  toxicity hearing loss and  not usually antibiotics. Clinically studied nutrients with antioxidant properties may help to treat or prevent hearing loss .

Having foods like broccoli, lettuce , pumpkin seeds ,  walnuts , fish , sweet potato and avocado . Lean animal protein and dairy products also provide enough blood flow. If diabetes is detected patient can visit an audiologist.

Topic: Dealing with the pre-teen & Adolescent Hormones and Importance of HPV vaccination

Mam has explained about Puberty and different changes in boys and girls  and  Hormonal changes throughout a woman's life .  Menopause and hot flashes common in women of older age.  Precocious puberty - girls of lower ages like 9 and 10 undergoing periods . Due to less activity and less nutrition diet, this is becoming common in girls these days.  Delayed puberty - by 13 no breast and pubic hair development, no menstruation by 16 . Usually due to unhealthy lifestyle and bad nutrition diet.

Congenita anomalies of female genital ( need to get ultrasound),  Heavy flow of period should be till day 5 , period cycle length is usually 28 days.  If heavy flow is experienced after day 7 or beyond day 7 , needs doctor checkup.  3 to 5 weeks period  is normal but anything less than 3 weeks and more than 5 weeks is abnormal . Need doctor checkup.

Polycystic ovary syndrome - symptoms -severe ache, excessive facial hair growth, weight gain , size of the ovary becomes larger . Usually, pcos is caused due to obesity, unhealthy diet, weakened immune system, family history also unhealthy lifestyle.

Tips to avoid pcos - regular exercise, follow healthy diet, positive diet and visit. Doctor if any symptom shows.

 Uterine Fibroids - usually are caused due to obesity and unhealthy diet , sometimes genetic . This is the overgrowth of uterine musculature , formation of fibroids . Symptoms - irregular cycles, heavy flow after day 7 , huge pain.  Key hole surgery / laparoscopy done for this.

Menstrual hygiene - use of Tampons , pads, menstrual cups can be used. keep private parts dry. If itching, foul Smell , white discharge is observed go to doctor.

Ma explained about Cervical cancer which is caused by HPV - human papilloma virus - most common STI . Increase risk for 15 to 25 years age women. Common even in monogamous relationship.

 Pap smear - cervix cells are scraped and examined under microscope for detection of cervical cancer.

HPV Vaccination - Below 14 - 2 doses , 15 to 26 - three doses . Given to even boys.

Self breast examination , safe abortion success , birth control method were also discussed.

Healthy habits to develop are- 1. Reduce junk food consumption , 2. Be mindful of portion size , we should not overeat, 3. Workout of any form should be done daily , 4. Sleep of 8 to 10 hours us compulsory , 5. Reduce stress, 6. No smoking or even passive smoking , 7. No alcohol consumption
