RATIONALE
The Department of
Biochemistry, in collaboration with the St. Joseph’s College Rangers Team, St.
Joseph’s College for Women (A), Visakhapatnam, is pleased to organize a One
Day Workshop on First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). This
initiative reflects the institution’s continued commitment to student welfare,
skill development, and community preparedness through meaningful educational
programmes.
In the contemporary
world, where unforeseen medical emergencies and accidents can occur at any
time, knowledge of First Aid and CPR has become an essential life skill,
particularly for students. Educational institutions serve as dynamic
environments where large groups of young individuals interact daily, making
preparedness for emergencies a shared responsibility. Training students in
First Aid and CPR enables them to respond promptly and effectively to
situations such as injuries, sudden illness, fainting, choking, or cardiac
emergencies, thereby reducing risk and preventing further harm.
First Aid provides the
immediate and temporary care given to an injured or ill person before
professional medical assistance becomes available. For students, acquiring
first aid knowledge enhances awareness, presence of mind, and confidence during
emergencies. It equips them with the ability to manage common situations such
as bleeding, burns, fractures, wounds, and loss of consciousness. Such timely
intervention can minimize the severity of injuries, prevent complications, and
contribute to faster recovery.
CPR, a critical emergency
procedure, plays a decisive role when an individual’s breathing or heartbeat
ceases. Early initiation of CPR significantly increases the chances of survival
during cardiac arrest or respiratory failure. By training students in CPR
techniques, this workshop aims to empower them to act decisively during
life-threatening situations, bridging the crucial time gap until advanced
medical care arrives.
Beyond emergency
response, First Aid and CPR training instills values of compassion,
responsibility, leadership, and service among students. It fosters a culture of
preparedness and social awareness, encouraging students to serve as responsible
first responders both within the campus and in the wider community. For
students of the life sciences, particularly biochemistry, such training also
reinforces theoretical knowledge through practical application related to human
physiology and health.
Through this workshop,
the Department of Biochemistry and the St. Joseph’s College Rangers Team seek
to create a safer academic environment by equipping students with essential
life-saving skills. The programme underscores the institution’s vision of holistic
education, nurturing informed, confident, and socially responsible individuals
capable of making a meaningful difference during critical moments.
