REPORT

Ranger Leader- Dr P. Mary Anupama

The St. Joseph’s College for Women Rangers Team, Visakhapatnam, organized a special event on the occasion of International Yoga Day on 23rd June 2026 from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM in the college premises. The program was conducted with the aim of creating awareness among students about the importance of yoga in maintaining physical, mental, and emotional well-being. The event consisted of a guest lecture and a practical yoga session under the theme “Yoga Practice for a Perfect Life.”

The chief resource person for the event was Ms. Neelapu Pushpa Latha, Yoga Teacher at St. Joseph’s College for Women (A), Visakhapatnam. She addressed the students on the significance of yoga in daily life and emphasized how yoga helps in achieving balance between body and mind. In her lecture, she explained that yoga is not only a physical exercise but also a discipline that improves concentration, reduces stress, strengthens immunity, and promotes a healthy lifestyle.

The session began with an introduction to the importance of International Yoga Day and its global relevance. Students were informed about how regular yoga practice contributes to better posture, improved breathing, flexibility, and mental peace. The speaker encouraged students to develop the habit of practicing yoga every day, even for a few minutes, to maintain a healthy and active life.

Following the lecture, a practical demonstration session was conducted in the college courtyard. Students actively participated with great enthusiasm and performed different yoga postures under the guidance of the instructor. The session included warm-up exercises, stretching techniques, breathing exercises, and several basic yoga asanas. The participants practiced postures focusing on flexibility, strength, and relaxation.

The group activity created a positive and energetic atmosphere, and students showed great interest in learning the techniques. The yoga instructor carefully monitored the postures and corrected the students wherever necessary, ensuring proper practice and safety. At the end of the session, a group photograph was taken with the resource person and the participants as a token of remembrance. The event concluded with words of gratitude to the guest speaker for her valuable guidance and encouragement.

The International Yoga Day celebration was a meaningful and successful event. It helped students understand the importance of yoga as a way of life and inspired them to include it in their daily routine.

 Report on Outcome Based Education (OBE) under NEP-2020 – CO-PO Mapping & Their Attainment Calculation under Autonomous Framework

A One Day Capacity Building Workshop on “Outcome Based Education (OBE) under NEP-2020 – CO-PO Mapping & Their Attainment Calculation under Autonomous Framework” was organized by SPACES Degree College (Autonomous) on May 14, 2026, at 10:00 AM.

 

The workshop aimed to enhance faculty understanding of Outcome-Based Education (OBE), Course Outcomes (COs), Program Outcomes (POs), Program Specific Outcomes (PSOs), and attainment calculations used in higher education assessment and accreditation processes.

The workshop featured expert sessions by distinguished academicians from St. Joseph’s College for Women (A), Visakhapatnam.

Session I – POs and PSOs: Their Importance

Speaker: Dr. P. Rosina George

Dr. P. Rosina George, Assistant Professor in Zoology, delivered an insightful lecture on Program Outcomes (POs) and Program Specific Outcomes (PSOs). She explained their role in curriculum design, academic planning, and quality enhancement. The speaker highlighted how POs and PSOs help institutions evaluate the overall development of students in terms of knowledge, skills, and employability. She also emphasized their importance in accreditation processes such as NAAC and in maintaining academic standards through measurable learning outcomes.

 

Session II – CO-PO Mapping

Speaker: Dr. E. Harini

Dr. E. Harini, Selection Grade Lecturer & Head, Department of Zoology, explained the concept of Course Outcome (CO) to Program Outcome (PO) Mapping. She discussed the preparation of CO statements, correlation levels, and the systematic alignment of course objectives with program outcomes. The session provided clarity on mapping procedures and demonstrated how effective CO-PO mapping helps in assessing curriculum effectiveness and student learning achievements.

 

Session III – Attainment Levels and Calculations

Speaker: Dr. P. Mary Anupama

Dr. P. Mary Anupama, Head & Assistant Professor, Department of Biochemistry, delivered a detailed session on attainment levels, their calculations, importance, and inference. She explained the concepts of direct and indirect attainment methods, including the use of internal assessments, semester examinations, assignments, and student feedback. The speaker demonstrated step-by-step procedures for calculating attainment levels and interpreting the results for academic improvement.

The lecture also focused on:

• Weightage distribution in attainment calculations
• CO attainment analysis
• Interpretation of attainment data
• Importance of attainment in Outcome-Based Education and accreditation

 

The workshop was highly interactive and benefited faculty members by providing practical understanding of OBE practices, mapping strategies, and attainment analysis. The participants appreciated the clarity and practical orientation of the sessions. The program concluded with a vote of thanks to the management, resource persons, and participants for the successful conduct of the workshop.

Report on Guest Lecture on Nucleic Acids

A guest lecture on “Nucleic Acids” was delivered by Dr. P. Mary Anupama to the postgraduate Chemistry students of St. Joseph's College for Women on 5th May 2026. The session aimed to provide an in-depth understanding of the chemistry, structure, and biological significance of nucleic acids, with special emphasis on the experimental proofs underlying nucleic acid structure.

The lecture began with an introduction to nucleic acids and their role as the genetic material of living organisms. Detailed explanations were provided on the structural organization of nucleotides and nucleosides. The speaker elaborated on the chemical and experimental proofs demonstrating that nitrogen bases are linked to ribose through the N9 position in purines. Hydrolysis studies, methylation experiments, X-ray crystallography, and stability analyses were discussed systematically.

Further, the session highlighted the chemical evidence supporting the furanose form of ribose and deoxyribose in nucleic acids. The lecture also explained the significance of phosphodiester linkages and the experimental proofs supporting the 3′–5′ phosphate linkage in nucleic acids. Students were introduced to the pioneering contributions of scientists such as Rosalind Franklin, Watson, Crick, and Todd in elucidating DNA structure.

A detailed description of the typical B-DNA structure was presented, including antiparallel strands, complementary base pairing, hydrogen bonding, helical dimensions, and the biological importance of major and minor grooves. The lecture successfully connected biochemical concepts with structural chemistry, helping students appreciate the molecular basis of heredity.

The session was highly interactive and informative. Students actively participated in discussions and clarified their doubts regarding nucleic acid chemistry and molecular structure. The lecture greatly enriched their conceptual understanding of advanced biomolecular chemistry topics.
