 CANCER: LET’S TALK, LET’S ACT

The Department of Biochemistry, St. Joseph’s College for Women (Autonomous), Visakhapatnam, successfully organized the Intercollegiate Fest titled Cancer: Let’s Talk, Let’s Act on 20th February 2026 from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. The programme aimed to create awareness on cancer prevention, early detection, and social responsibility through academic and creative competitions. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from more than 120 registered students representing several institutions including St. Joseph’s College for Women (A), Dr. Lankapalli Bullayya College, ANITS, Andhra University, AQJ Degree & PG College, Dr. V.S. Krishna Government Degree College, MVR Degree College, Prism Degree College, VITS and others.

The inaugural session was graced by Dr. Sheetal Madan, BHMS, Rashee Homeo Clinic, as the Chief Guest, whose keynote address highlighted the importance of awareness and lifestyle changes in cancer prevention. She emphasized on having a proper lifestyle and avoiding junk food. Students have to get rid of mobiles by 8.0 pm and sleep by 10.00 pm to have proper health. having cooldrinks and junk food, irregular sleeping patterns can cause cancer. Madam emphasized on stress reiving as stress sis part of life. She recommended breathing exercises and pranayama for healthy lungs and detoxification. She told to take cardamom as it is known to destress and improve performance in exams. The Guest of HonourMajor Sri S. Subba Rao, Retired Professor and Visiting Professor at ANITS, inspired the gathering with his academic and NCC Major experience. Sir asked students to talk about the topic to their families and friends. Many women do not know this and ignore symptoms which makes the therapy difficult in cancer patients. Hence, he said that students should maintain self-disciplined life and also promote it for a better society. As sir is the contributor for mementoes, he mentioned that he has donated in the name of this mother Bhagiradama garu who dies of Breast cancer.

Brochure release for Intercollegiete competitions- 2026

 

Date- 10th February, 2026. The Department of Biochemistry, St. Joseph’s College for Women (Autonomous), Visakhapatnam, is organising Intercollegiate Competitions on “Cancer: Let’s Talk, Let’s Act” on 20th February 2026, from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m., for undergraduate and postgraduate students. In this regard, the brochure for the event was formally released today

The event includes competitions such as PowerPoint presentations, poster presentations, quiz, and video making, with a focus on creating awareness on cancer, its prevention, early detection, myths and facts, and supportive care. The programme aims to stimulate scientific thinking and social responsibility among students.

Speaking on the occasion, the Principal, Dr. Sr. Shyji, emphasized that awareness on cancer is the need of the hour. She highlighted that lifestyle-related cancers are increasing and urged students to start thinking about ways to prevent cancer through healthy habits, early screening, and awareness, and to become responsible ambassadors of health in society.

The organisers expressed their gratitude to Dr. Bhaskara Sudha, Dr. P. K. Jayalakshmi, Dr. Sujatha, Dr. Harini, Dr. Padma Sundari, Dr. Rosina, Ms. Sony, and Ms. Urmila for their gracious presence and encouragement during the brochure release.

Addressing the gathering, the Convenor, Dr. Anupama, and Co-Convenor, Dr. Mousami, stated that the programme is organised to stimulate young minds on cancer, its prevention and possible remedies. They emphasized that students are the ones who can spread awareness to their families and carry this knowledge forward to future generations, thereby contributing to a healthier society.

The programme will feature an expert session by Dr. Sheetal Madan, Specialist in Cancer Patient Treatment, followed by student competitions under various awareness-oriented sub-themes.
