STRUCTURAL ORGANIZATION OF PROTEINS

Proteins, the essential building blocks of life, are organized into four levels of structural complexity: primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary. The primary structure is the linear sequence of amino acids, while the secondary structure involves local folding into α-helices and β-sheets. The tertiary structure is the overall three-dimensional shape of a single polypeptide chain, and the quaternary structure describes the arrangement of multiple polypeptide chains (subunits) in multi-subunit proteins. 

Elaboration:

 Primary Structure:

This level defines the exact sequence of amino acids in a protein, which is determined by the genes coding for that specific protein. Each amino acid is connected to the next by a peptide bond, forming a linear chain. 

 Secondary Structure:

This level involves local folding of the polypeptide chain due to hydrogen bonding between the amino and carbonyl groups of the peptide backbone. Common secondary structures include α-helices (coiled structures) and β-pleated sheets (sheet-like structures). 

 Tertiary Structure:

This level describes the overall three-dimensional shape of a single polypeptide chain, including all of the secondary structural elements. This shape is determined by interactions between the side chains (R-groups) of the amino acids, which can include hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonds, salt bridges, and disulfide bonds. 

 Quaternary Structure:

This level is only present in proteins that consist of multiple polypeptide chains (subunits). The subunits interact with each other through the same types of interactions that determine tertiary structure, forming a complex three-dimensional structure

National Safe Motherhood day

 The Ranger Team of St. Joseph's College for Women (A) have observed National Safe Motherhood day on 11th April 2025. the students made posters and quotes for the day and showed them on dias of college to create awareness on the need to take care of pregnant women and feeding mothers for the better health of child.

Report on Antidrug Abuse Awareness Program

The AICUF federation conducted an impactful antidrug abuse awareness program, "Say No To Drugs," emphasizing the importance of youth rejecting substance abuse. The initiative aimed to educate students about the dangers of drug addiction and promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

- Students enthusiastically participated, spreading awareness class-to-class.

- The program fostered a sense of responsibility among youth to make informed choices.

The guest lecture on E-Waste and Child Health highlighted the alarming issue of electronic waste generation and its impact on children's health. Key points discussed:


E-Waste Statistics

- 62 million tons of e-waste generated globally

- Only 22% processed in 2013

- 32% increase in e-waste generation from 2010 to 2022


Health Risks

- Exposure to toxic metals like lithium, lead, mercury, and cadmium

- Skin exposure, inhalation, ingestion, and transplacental exposure

- Effects on children, including rag pickers and those in e-waste disposal sectors


E-Waste Management

- Current methods: landfill, acid bath, incineration, and mechanical recycling

- Importance of proper recycling processes: collection, transportation, shredding, reuse, and material recovery


Role of Government and Manufacturers

- Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations

- Sustainable design and durable products

- Examples of companies promoting e-waste management


Best Practices

- Minimize e-waste generation at home and organizational levels

- Proper disposal and recycling practices

- Examples of innovative solutions, such as using plastic chips for road construction
